compression test post #s for each cylinder. welcome to iboats. the more info you give the better your answer, you post 115 hp. give year or preferable model #. is this motor new to you, give any history you may have.

Re: engine ran hot and now no start

My '75 70 hp had a sticking thermostat that finally stuck closed.......at WOT. Cost me an overhaul. Cylinder walls were galled and there was too much friction to get it started. Pulling the plugs and exhaust water jacket cover andlooking into the cylinders will tell you real quick. If you see aluminum chips you are due.

Mark

Re: engine ran hot and now no start

ok first the year it is a 1979 johnson 115. I did a compression test an i think it is realy low right bank top cyl is 30 psi, bottom is 35 psi, left bank top is 60 psi and bottom is 45psi. i have not pulled the cyl head off yet but i did get it to start and run for a minit or 2 but would not ideal and died and will not restart, tries but just wont. i think it is due to low compression (gaulded cylinders). and thanks for all the replies

Re: engine ran hot and now no start

The history on the boat is that i just bought it and ran it in the yard. It ran fine water pump was working good and all. I took the boat to the lake and ran the boat about 15 minutes and was going along i looked at the water outlet and it was pumping a minut later the boat started to bog and then died i looked and it was smoking a little. i thought to thermistat must have stuke so i let it cool and removed them and now the engine will not restart.

Re: engine ran hot and now no start

Mine was a 3 cyl and it was 15 years ago. Needed boring and oversized pistons along with other normally changed things. I only gave the mechanic the powerhead. $750 for that and another $250 for other things while I was in there.

Mark
