That's what i read in the manual. But,

Take a look at this,

I can't make sense of this, it looks to be a right left placement thing.

There's actually 2 hole and both in different places

And you can see on the higher hole there is a little section that is machined flat.
I don't know if this is for clearance or something.

Re: Engine reassembly question. Connecting rod Evinrude 70hp

I have my 1988 70 Hp evinrude apart as well. I have the pistons and rods on my bench right here..

two of them when looking at the hole on the rod that can be seen while attached to the piston have the UP' that is stamped on the top of the piston ...to the right

the other when looking at that hole in the rod has the UP on the piston to the left.... hmmm

is that really going to matter??? this motor was recently rebuilt all the pieces still look very new....

did the guy put the one picton back on the rod backwards???

My OMC 86 manual show's the oil hole at the bottom side of the wrist pin, and must face up. My 87 manual say's the rod can face either way, which make's sense with the hole at the top of the rod facing straight out. Make's you wonder how it can oil at all that way.

Think about the way the fuel (with oil in it) flows in and thru the crankcase. The bearing will get lube on it regardless of where the hole is or even if a hole exists.

There are alignment bumps on the rod and on the cap. Those always face up.
