Engine Rebuild Question

I have a 1988 Wellcraft Concept with a Chevy 454 and Mercruiser outdrive. The guy I bought it from had replaced the block. The block is already mounted and aligned. I need to put everything back on ( intake, exhaust, dist, outdrive, etc.).

I bought the Mercruiser Manual, because of the advice of almost everyone on this board. I also bought this gasket set:

Do you guys suggest any more purchases before my friend and I get into this. He has been turning wrenches for 30 years. I don't want to waste his time by not having everything we need when we start.

Thank you, this forum has tons of valuable information.

Re: Engine Rebuild Question

I think you got it covered. If you find out you forgot something, you should be able to get it locally. That's the beauty of BBC's and SBC's. The non-marinized parts are available everywhere.

Make sure all your tin is cleaned up and repainted if not already done.

Your friend should already know this, but you'll need an oil pump priming tool. I rented one from Auto Zone when I did mine.

Last, but not least, make sure your manifolds are in good shape. I had one let go within 30 minutes of firing up fir the first time. Water in cylinders 1, 3 and 5 not a good thing!

Re: Engine Rebuild Question

Thanks KaGee!

I can usually find my answers by searching the boards, but this is a big project. I will take pictures and post in the restoration boards.

Getting ready to do the Comit and Scotch Brite treatment on the exterior. Compound and polish didn't get the red as bright as I wanted.

We will be on here this weekend if we run into any problems with the rebuild.

Thanks again, I will pay close attention to the exhaust.
