the engine in my boat is a 1992 gm marine engine 454, the engine is cooled seperately by anti freeze with a heat exchanger, the marine replacement gaskets for a rebuild are about 300-500 dollars for a set. rings about 30$ a hole, bearings are up there too. about 800-900 for parts for a ring /bearing overhaul. an overhaul kit for the same generation 5 motor from an automotive supplier is 300$ delivered to my door in 2 days. i would like to know why the automotive kit would not be feasible for this engine. i dont see anything different but price.....thanks kc

Re: engine rebuild

Most head gaskets used today are composite.
Make sure the gasket set isn't from the last century.
Buy a set with composite head gaskets and you'll be okay.
