I know it's a dumb one, but what direction is the engine rotation? Does that mean that rotating the flywheel the opposite direction is bad for the impeller?

Clockwise looking down on the flywheel.

Turning it backwards is not good for the impeller, but some can stand it better than others. Depends on what motor you have.
