Marooned, it is possible that when you put your outdrive back to gether you dropped a bearing out of the u-joint if you took it apart or perhaps you did not line up the u-joint properly. Did that one on a S series international and darn near shook myself out of the truck. I was only off by one spline.

Re: Engine Shaking

I've never owned an outdrive, but I have tested U-joints on cars and trucks by sticking a long straight blade screwdriver into the joint with the drive in gear (engine off of course) and wiggling it. If its bad I have been able to feel it this way.

I still think your problem is carburetion. Unless you have a pretty bad mechanical problem, your engine stops making power at 2800 rpm. Check the air bleeds in the carb throat for a quick and easy trouble shooting step. You should be able to see the little holes are open.

Re: Engine Shaking

In the interest of those who might experience this problem in the future, here is what resolved the problem:

I replaced the spark plug wires, fuel pump, and rebuilt the carb - to no avail.

I finally called in a mechanic. It took him four hours, but he determined that I had installed the points incorrectly. At first I felt like an idiot, but when I looked at the old points, I realized they were one piece, while the new points were two pieces; with no instructions! Anyway, once the points were put together properly, everything worked great! I still feel good about replacing all the other stuff, because now it is new, and I won't have to worry about it for quite awhile. Such is the life of a project boat owner!

Spark plug wires do go bad. Whoever told you they dont is foolish. Their replacement is part of a good tune up. 8.8 MM.

Re: Engine Shaking

I worked my way through college working in an auto parts store & a dealership. We sold our share of spark plug wires & I've put a set or two on my own vehicles (reluctantly). That never ever once fixed anything, including the ones I put on. They always came back the next day, just like I did, for some other part. I can see how something can go wrong, like they get burned or someone pulls on them at the wrong place & the ends come loose or off. But it seems to me a general waste of money. It's pretty much wires, is wires. They just carry the electricity. It's kinda' like replacing the wiring in a house. It happens, but not often.
