What engine size do i need for my project boat? It's a 1978 V-19 Bow Rider, it presently has a seized 1969 85hp Johnson that i will replace. The tag says 145 hp max, should i just try to find a 145 hp Johnson and be done with it? What would be a good mid size engine for this boat? Thanks

Re: Engine size?

I would be looking for a Johnny/Rude in the 115-140hp class. Over 140 and you are looking at a 6 cyl & more weight. Also you do not want to go over the max hp your boat is rated for.

I think a 140hp would be sweet on that thing.

i guess i should of mentioned it's a 1978 Angler V-19 bow rider. What would a used 140 hp Johnson go for?

I'd think a 115hp inline 6 Merc would be bulletproof on that thing. Better than 4-cyl Johnsons of the same era.

Everybody has their own opinion. I would have said just the opposite. I've seen many a Merc greanade, while Johhnyrudes seem to last almost forever.

I just love BRP products, had pretty good luck with their products so far.

Would going 5 or 10 hp over rated hp be too much?

Wheras BRP only bought OMC a few short years ago. Looking at the age of the boat I did not realize you were planning on putting a new motor on it. I was thinking 20year old vintage for that boat. My apologies. However, and this is directed at another post.....let me know how many inline 6 Mercs you've seen blown and I'll tell you why each of them blew. In 30+ years of Merc motors in my town, there has never been a inline 6 Merc go down because of design, rather lack of maintenance or wrong pitch prop(cause they hate to be lugged down)

I know nothing about Mercs myself, i've always had Johnsons. I grew up in Granby Quebec about 30 miles from Valcourt, i tend to support my region. I also lived in Kelowna B.C. for a while and my wife was one of the boat builders at Campion marine. I have never seen a Merc die or a johnson for that matter but i have seen coils fail.
