Looking at an older boat with a sick volvo/penta 225E. From what I read this is a small block Chevy (305) V-8.

In a non-marine application you can not tell a 5.0 L (305) from a 5.7 L. (350) and all mounting is the same. Question, does this hold true in marie applications. I would MUCH rather work with a 350 than the 5.0.

Thoughts, gotchas, etc.

It would be foolhardy to replace a 305 with another 305 when a 350 is for all intents and purposes the same engine in every aspect other than bore and head chamber volume.
Drop a 350 in it.
You will want to use all the externals (carb, starter, alternator, ignition system, circulation pump, fuel pump, etc) off the old 305, use brass core plugs, and either use a marine short/long block or a truck engine of the same vintage (1 piece rear main or 2 piece)

I replaced my volvo 200D (305 2bbl) with a 350 4bbl. I used all of the stuff off the 305. Worked great, except now I have built a 383 for the same boat :)

If you get another 305 or a 350, I would suggest you stick with the old style engine, or you won't be able to get the larger flywheel inside the intermediate housing (aka bellhousing). Of course if you can find the newer (larger) intermediate housing, go for it.

Ayuh,.....

Or you could get a GM 12" flywheel for a 1 piece main seal......
