Engine stalls as throttle advanced out of idle.

I have a '96 Johnson 175 Oceanrunner outboard that starts fine and idles fine. I can also put it into reverse and forward gears fine with no problems. When I try to advance the throttle however, in either gear, the engine stalls. I've done what I can, carbs are newly cleaned, fuel filter is cleaned, there are no fuel leaks, fuel is getting to the engine.

This happened all of a sudden one day out on the water without warning.

Can anyone offer any suggestions, it is kind of hard to ski at 3 knots!!!

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

Welcome to iboats.
Make sure timing linkage didnt come loose and that your butterflies are opening fully at full throttle.
If thats ok, then check your spark. Make sure you are getting a good blue spark to each clinder. It should jump about 7/16 inch.

When you say, "Carbs are newly cleaned" are you referring to a complete breakdown and rebuild done professionally by the book? If not then I would suspect a clogged jet in the carb or a bad fuel pump (low pressure).

Re: Engine stalls as throttle advanced out of idle.

Does it do this all the time or only when it is warm? Can you get it running by revving it in neutral first to "clear" the motor?

If fuel system OK, few other things to check:
(i) faulty interrupter switch on the gear shifter lever in the motor. This kills the spark on one bank of cylinders as you change out of gear. You may only be getting spark to 3 cylinders (as Basscat says - check your spark).

(ii) Sticky timer plate. This is the plastic plate mounted on top of the flywheel which holds the optical sensor. Sometimes these can stick in their track - meaning that the timing is not correct at idle speeds.

(iii) Maybe a faulty optical sensor.

You can stick a timing light on each spark plug lead when the motor is running and check that you are getting a spark at the right time. There are marks on the timer wheel corresponding to each cylinder.

Re: Engine stalls as throttle advanced out of idle.

Thanks for the replies.

The carbs were done professionally and there were quite a few clogs that were cleaned. This had no effect on the problem, but am glad I had it done nonetheless.

There is nothing loose with the timing linkage.

I did find one thing accidentally though. As I start the engine, if I hold the key in the START position, then I am able to advance the engine without it stalling out.

Any other thoughts on this?

Thanks again,

Bruce

in my limited experience, it sounds like an electrical problem

When you say "start" position, do you mean pushing the key in to activate the primer or turning it so that the starter motor is activated?

If activating the primer fixes the problem, it sounds like a fuel problem.

I have a similar problem with my 1999 150HP Evinrude. If you move the throttle forward slowly, it does ok and once the engine is warmed up it does not have a problem.

Do these engines have the equivalent of an accelerator pump that adds extra gas when you move the throttle?

Is yours a carb or injected motor skibondu? There is no accelerator pump.

If yours is a carb motor, a lot of people have similar problems. See the recent post "2001 oceanpro dies when warm" for more info. Better start a new thread if you want to pursue further.

Re: Engine stalls as throttle advanced out of idle.

Seasport, pushing the key doesn't do anything. It is only when the key is turned and held in the START position, not good for the starter I'm sure, but for some reason was still able to advance the engine.

In my case, moving the throttle slowly forward does nothing. It idles nice around 800 RPM then as I advance the throttle slowly it starts to run a little rough until it just stops. It never gets above idle RPM, whether in gear or in neutral, and whether warm or cold.

Re: Engine stalls as throttle advanced out of idle.

Hmm. The powerpack and optical sensor in the OIS ignition system normally receive their power from the power coil in the stator. Without this, the powerpack won't fire the coils beyond cranking speed. The powerpack has a separate power feed (yellow/red wire) from the starter solenoid which powers the electronics during cranking (before the power coil kicks in). So I'd bet that your powerpack isn't being powered unless you are turning over the starter motor.

I suspect you have a problem with your powercoil in the stator. If this is open circuit or grounded, you will get no power to your ignition electronics (& hence no spark) unless you are cranking the engine.

Unplug the cable from the stator to the powerpack and with a multimeter set on ohms check the resistance between the orange & orange/black wires. It should be around 45-65 ohms. Then check the resistance from each lead to ground (there should be no connection). If you can access a DVA meter you should be able to measure 11-24V across the power coil with the engine running.

If these tests indicate a bad powercoil, you're in for a new stator.

There was a post a while back "Evinrude 150 OIS 2000 No Fire/Spark" which covered the same topic.

Seasport et al:

I didn't have the right equipment to do the tests myself, but I sent a mechanic in the right direction asking him to check the stator.

As it turned out, the stator was the problem, so I am now back on the water.

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks OBJ. I get it right sometimes - but I'm no match for the Masters (you included of course!).
