1986 Bayliner Capri with Penta 131AQa
Recently taken in for a service, compression was good on all cylinders. Plugs replaced at that time also.
This has happened a few times now, I am able to restart the engine after a few moments but would like to fix it obviously.

If I slowly wind it up it is ok, just when I put the hammer down.

Any ideas?

Re: Engine stalls under rapid full throttle

Welcome to to iboats :) I'm assuming all of the ignition parts are doing exactly what they are supposed to...Timing, dwell and all that....The next thing would be the carb., especially the accelerator pump dumping more fuel than the engine can handle....It is basically 'flooding'.... I say re-build the carb.....JK

The Volvo 4 cylinder engines are very picky about everything in the ignition system. The points, and condenser, cap and rotor could also cause your problem. The dwell needs to be correct and the timing spot on to work properly. Could also just need carb adjustment or have an accelerator pump problem.
Any of the above could cause your problem.

I don't believe that they did anyting with the carb. He mentioned that the timing was way off and that the distributor was stuck and possibley missing a tooth. I was told that I could have that addressed over the winter though. I have taken it out twice since then and have noticed a hesitation and the stall during hard acceleration though.
When I get it back in for the winterization I will ask about the carb rebuild.

Also, where is the fuel filter on this system?

Thanks for the help so far.

If the distributor was that bad, what would make him think it would wait for winter. If you want to use the boat, get it fixed. You sure can't make an engine with a defective distributor run properly by rebuilding the carb.

He did manage to get the timing set. I meant that it was stuck in the block, it could be adjusted but not removed.

Its possible that the accelerator pump is not working. Easy enough to check, just take off the flame arrestor and watch down the carb for fuel while moving the throttle. Of course do this while the engine is off.

Justin

Re: Engine stalls under rapid full throttle

I would have to vote for accelerator pump possibly an improper float adjustment along with it.

Why was the timing way off? Timing just doesn't get off unless something is broken, or it has been monkeyed with. Before trying to get the carb fixed or anything else, get that distributor checked out. Why didn't the mechanic work at it if he thought it was bad? And a better question, why would it be stuck if it will turn to adjust?

If timing is off possibly the advance is not working properly too. I have seen a few stuck in advance making the timing hard to set.

Get the distributor checked first, then go to carb assuming all other circuits are good (plugs, wires, rotor etc.)

Good luck and let us know.

Re: Engine stalls under rapid full throttle

I am not sure why the timing was way off. I just bought the boat recently and the seller indicated that he had a service done shortly before.

Thanks for the info, I will have the carb done anyway over the winter as well as correct the distributor problem.
