I have a 1988 OMC 5.7L 260 HP engine and while taking it out for the first time this weekend it would stall when i put it into gear. It wouldn't happen every time but maybe 50% of the time. Also, While we were out it sounded like the engine back fired and after it would only give me half the horse power and the engine sounded slightly louder. Any idea what the problem may be? Thanks!

Is this a new-to-you boat and you've not had it running before? If so, did you check compression on the cylinders? I'm no expert, but first thought is something in the head based on the description.

If not, kinda' start ruling out fuel, air and spark.

Welcome aboard.

Thank you! This is a new-to-me boat and the previous owner was a retired mechanic who assured me that the engine is in great condition. He had put new fuel into the boat prior to me buying but after talking to a few people they seem to think its something to do with the plugs. I'm going to take a look today. Hopefully nothing more than that. Thanks for the response!

Also make sure the ESA isn’t staying engaged which can happen when the micro switches wear out or if the transom shift cable gets sticky.

One of the spark plugs had a broken electrode, I'm guessing i found the culprit. Thanks for the response!

One of the spark plugs had a broken electrode, hoping that was the issue. Thanks for the response!
