Engine stalls when shifting

1984 Mercruiser 260 w/alpha 1 out drive had new bellows and shift cable put in Fresh tune up and carb rebuilt. Engine runs great will idle all day at 800 RPM when you try to shift into eather forward or reverse engine will die. Not sure if interupter switch is working is there a ajustment and also is there such a thing as sincronizing the throttle cable with the shift cables. this problem existed befor the bellows were replaced and carb rebuilt.:

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,..... Who did the Work,..??

Bring it back,... Changing the lower shift cable Should have Fixed that issue...
The Interupt switch Is working, it's killing the motor... The Cable is dragging....

Btw,... The Idle is Too High,... Should be 650/ 700rpms, in the water, in gear....

lower shift cable adjustment

1984 mercruiser 260 alph 1 can the lower shift cable be adjusted with the boat in the water I relise it will take two people, boat hes a full swim deck. should have the mechanic that did the bellows do this. I was told they put new shift cables in it. this was an issue befor the bellows were replaced.

All the adjustments are done INSIDE the boat, not outside. And yes they can be done in the water.
Go up to the Adults only sticky at the top of this forum and download service manual #6. Complete instructions (including pictures) is in it.

Thanks for the info, I thought a qualified mechanic at a repital shop in Ohio on Lake Erie did the work. I think I will call them tommaro. Engine runs great hard to get away from the dock stalling all the time.

agjust your idle adjustment screw to 700 rpms.,, won't fix the other prob but at least you'll be in range of recommended specs. lower cable may need adjusting...ck this link before replacing cable

Hotrod, just post one post about a problem. Two threads on the same problem gets more confusing than this one merged thread.
