Engine stalls when shifting

I have an '89 mercruiser. My problem is that every time I try to shift into gear (fwd or rev) the rpms dive and the engine cuts. I can start up no problem and in idle it sounds fine. The engine and rpms sound and act normally when I use throttle only.
I have had trouble previously with the engine stalling when going from gear to idle. Now I can't even get into gear. Could it be a shift cable replacement could fix this problem?

Shift cable, check the sticky section there is a great write up on it..

As mentioned, you are probably due for a shift cable replacement. I was able to get a few more months out of mine by tinkering with the shift interupter switch but finally had to replace the cable.
