i've never pulled an engine before and want to get it done the less painful way. i don't have a garage although a friend will let me store it in his while i re-do the floor. the plan is to use a nearby mechanic's engine hoist and then a pick-up truck to move the engine to my friend's garage.

will an engine stand hold the tranny too? if not, does that mean i either have to take the tranny off or just leave the whole thing on the floor on a pallet? how do you connect the engine to the stand?...hang it in the air with a hoist?

i've got 1050 hours on this engine and should probably send it to machine shop while it's out though it had been running good (has sat for the past year). what am i looking at there? i should pull the carb, risers, exhaust manifolds...what else? what do i ask them to check and how much might i be looking at spending there?

i guess i've been lucky in that i've been able to stay away from machine shops so far in my boating career. sorry for some of the more basic questions.

thanks in advance

Your typical roll around engine stand holds the engine via the same bolt holes as the trany does to the block. So you can't have the tranny mounted to the block while on the engine stand.
Typically you bolt the engine stand bracket to the back of the engine then with a hoist put it into the engine stand.

If you shop around I am sure you can find an engine stand that does allow the tranny to stay on tho.

I have a friend that years ago made engine racks that allowed you to stack six chevy engines with trannys attached one ontop of the other.

An engine cradle will hold both, but will not allow easy access to the oil pan. If you're not planning on doing any engine work a cradle is what you want. That said, a nice big used tire works perfectly well for a cradle. Put the big part of the oil pan in the center of the tire.

i think with 1050 hours on the engine, if the manifolds & risers have not been changed recently, they should atleast be checked. while out and they are easy to get to. also before restarting the engine, you really need to prime the oil pump. to get oil back on the moving parts. it's also a great time to adjust valves, and just do the general service.

i'll look around for a good stand.

i'm thinking i should change the oil pan. i've had an exhaust leak in this boat for a long time and most things in the engine compartment are showing signs of moisture. i'm also thinking i should change out the oil pump while i'm there.

exhaust manifolds and risers are original and they've seen better days. i'm planning to get new.

valves and stuff are beyond my experience. what else should i have checked? if i were to strip stuff off the block and take it to a shop, what would i ask them to check? how hard are the valves to adjust?

thx

Valve adjustment is dead-on simple. Head on over to the correct forum for your particular make of motor and ask a few questions.
