What size engine stand do you think I will need to do a build up 0n 1979n 305m Mercruiser?

Will a 1000lb work or will I need a 2000lb

I want to put the exhaust manifolds on while on the stand.

Anyone know what the motor weighs intact?

Probably in the neighborhood of 500lbs for the long block, not more than 700 fully dressed I wouldn't imagine.

Ayuh,.... While the motor might be under the limit of the light-weight stands,...

I always use my Heavy-weight stand, because otherwise, handling the motor gives ya the feelin' it's gonna Break the lighter 1s to pieces...

The stand I built for my fully assembled 4.3 has rotation supports front and rear. I'm guessing I could build up a pair of BBC on it and it wouldn't break... .:D :D :D But that's just me..... Oh, and I use a 2,240lb chain block to lift it in and out of the boat....

Chris.....

Another thing to not forget, that 1000 lbs is static weight, hard to say how many pound of force is exerted on that 1000 lb stand when you are bouncing the engine putting it together.
I don't mind puting the block together on the small stands, but when it's time for the heads and the rest of the engine, it goes on a heavier stand.
