Re: ENGINE SWAP 305 merc to 350 chev truck

Am I better off using the camshaft from my 305 mercruiser engine in my 350 truck engine? How do I identify the cam grind of my 350 cam and is ther somewhere IO can look to compare its specs to a marine cam?

A truck grind is close if not identical to a marine grind. Will work just fine.

Nice to see someone give advice worth it's cost

Or you could just buy Dennis Moores book and read the specs yerself.......

Well, the first edtion of Dennis's book was published in 2000.....so that kinda blows your story about reading it in 1973.

By stainless head gaskets do you mean just the flame rings or the complete gaskets?

buy felpro marine gaskets.

these auto vs marine threads can get childish. make your own choice with the information that is available to you.

30,40, 50 years ago, no there was not much difference. today is another story.

the clevite web site will give you information on materials used in bearings exposed to a harsh marine enviroment. read it. marine part numbers here. chrome or ductile/moly rings? again you must decide.

sure truck heads have valve springs designed to run at 4-5 grand all day long. NOT. Mr. Moore is a poster on another board and although i have not read his book ( i'm a ford guy ), he's seems to have knowledge based on experience.

cam lift, duration and lobe seperation is a black art. sure you can stick a tight lobe center cam in, but water in cylinders threads suck also...........

bottom line. slap a 1200 motor in a run the **** out of it or spend a little more and have a motor that will last.

these auto vs marine threads can get childish. make your own choice with the information that is available to you.

I agree not only do they get childish but the information exchanged is borderline ludicrous

Chevy Truck valve springs, and that chevy truck Camshaft 340284 with the whopping .410 In lift
use identical valve springs to the ones
in every 305 marine engine I've dissasembled

most of these guys that are asking questions all have 305's, 305's do not have the performance heads or cams.

Same OEM springs and cams used in
9 out of 10 volvo 305's 4 or 5000 all day whatever dude, keep reading books if thats what it takes for you to give advice worth giving

305 200 hp 350 249hp I rest my case

and absolutely promise to stay out of these discussions in the future

sure truck heads have valve springs designed to run at 4-5 grand all day long. If they can't find Dennis on their own, they don't need his advice. ;)

It's not like he hides or anything.
