I am a two boat owner .
One is a 2004 pristine Regal Commodore 30 ft cruiser , expensive and my priority.
Marina kept our water condo using few days a week. RETIRED . Boat is a cruiser not set for fishing

MY TOPIC 1984 walk around cuddy cabin Sea Fisherman Model . Limited production
Not worth more then 5 grand everything working, Which means 4 thousand
Owing 15 years. Original 488 mercruiser engine, was not dependable fished close too shore and many calls too SEA TOW

Regal purchase at ( consignment shop ) had an option too let dealer sell sea ray .
Was In process of redoing helm, removing rotted wood replacing with starboard.
Boat kept at my home. Working an hour here hour there had mixed feelings on selling was like therapy
Engine would not start , Compression test low compression in 2 cylinders.
Not fixing that crap engine .
Ran number of Craigslist adds with some response , selling cheap knowing engine work needed.

One part of me does not want too sell, I like the style , looks like a Boston Whaler

Owing a 30 ft cruiser and a 21 ft boat they both offer different plusses .
The 21 footer I can tow all over, fish , get it dirty, easy too work on, tows easily , fast in out at ramp . burns little fuel

Considering selling Regal ,finding that boat that has cabin appointments wife would like along with fishing convenience but frugal on fuel cause I want too travel by water when the mood hits us

I am always checking ebay & Craigslist for another 4 cylinder engine. I came across a almost new 3.7 with 111 hours .
Compression is perfect. New manifold & riser,
Also has electronic ignition, stator was taken out and alternator with proper bracket assembly installed. Fires right up and idles great .
What a find for a few hundred bucks

Pulled old 488 Bilge was a swamp
Going thru transom banging with mallet discovered a hollow area on starboard side mid way .

I don't like doing anything 1/2 assed . My mechanic is like a friend , knows the Regal but never saw the ray
He jumps on ray and says this is a nice boat, He says, I like the fishing room and layout with small cuddy for ruffing it overnight or get out of rain ,sun .
Saying yes that's why I want too keep it . He says pull everything , gimbal housing, power steering actuator. Bring boat back he will cut inside
Saying I do the grunt work which is the tough part clean it all down too fiberglass , he has all the material in stock from other jobs,

I don't know if I have it in me . Regal is a 50 thousand dollar boat, why am I messing with a 4 thousand dollar boat? Am I cheap? .

I am thinking hell with it, install engine ,
Reading other posts fellow boats indicated screws from depth finder and other items put thru transom is usually the cause
I noticed small leak years ago, thought it was bellows or a hose or possibly gimbal gasket ? Recorked around gimbal, bellows & hoses were changed over the years.

Noticed leak was coming thru a screw from depth finder mounted on bottom of transom .
Removed screw put boat into water, sure enough water was entering boat . . Filled with 5200. No more leak
Repositioned fish finder with smaller screw, 5200 around screw
This might have been this way for many years
When I fish I don't go 30 miles off shore, I stay inland intra coastal or off jetty.
I know once I remove everything the wood around gimbal could possibly be rotten. Boat is still 33 years old

What is the worst that can occur , could have possibly been hollow for years never knowing
When boat is stored tilted all the way up, bilge screw left off, no water ever sits in bilge

Since engine is out is there anything I can make transom firmer .
I know when I get into it will do it the right way, but curious

thanks

That is a long read, to get to the question.

Since engine is out is there anything I can make transom firmer .

Don't know anything that can stiffen up wood once wood. They do make some stuff like get-rot but it really doesn't stiffen IMO. That kind of stuff stops some of the mold that would continue to grow if not done

A 33 year old boat with rot and a 3.7, it isnt a $4000 boat, its a $400 boat at best. however if you love the boat, were here to help you

go to the sticky here http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat-...at-information

read link 14, then link 2, 3, 4a, and 4b.

the only cure for rot is to remove it and repair the transom, stringers, bulkheads, deck, etc.

33 years ago, the boat shows up at the assembly line, the worker takes a jig, marks the size of the cut-out, fires up a saw about as course as a chain saw, hoggs out a large opening, fires up a drill motor, makes a bunch of holes, and slaps the transom shield on. then they slap in the motor and fire in a few lag bolts with an impact gun. the key to making a boat is to get it out the door and sold ASAP. screw holes were not sealed, cuts were not sealed and the boat had a 10 year life expectancy

personally if it was me, i would remove the 3.7 and find a 4.3 to put in since you have to chase the rot up the stringers, bulkhead, foam, deck, etc.

the 3.7 suffers from a variety of issues that stem from bad engineering decisions made in its design:
heat exchanger - good idea
iron head on aluminum block - bad idea
floating bores - bad idea
single seal separating electrics from coolant - bad idea
