I am a newbie to this site and seeking some advice on a 3.0 mercrusier. My engine a 3.0 mercrusier in a 178XL Chapparell has gone south (cracked block and head between cylinders 2 & 3) on me and I will have to replace it with another one. Trying to locate one CL or Ebay on the cheap. My Question is how difficult is it to replace with another 3.0 or an engine of another size-say and a small v6, v8, or a 165

Thks

I deleted the duplicate topic you started in the wrong forum, Mercury outboards.

Several have done Mercruiser I/O swaps. You should get plenty of help.

Good luck w your project and welcome to iboats

I swapped a motor last year, 4.3 mercruiser. I got mine from Rapido marine out of Florida. It is a remanufactured motor. They shipped it to me on a crate. I got it installed and it is running great with the exception of an overheating issue which I don't believe is due to a motor issue.

To go from a 3.0 to something else just requires a bit of fibreglass work to make new mount blocks

Ayuh,.... Only another 3.0l will be a plug, 'n play swap, provided ya get another motor on the same side of 1990 as the motor ya got now,....
On the wrong side of 1990 will mean swappin' the flywheel/ coupler,...

Anything other than a 3.0l will need new motor mounts, 'n a different drive gear ratio,....

If you have to ask, " how much trouble", then the answer is usually too much! If you stick with a 3.0, you could do it in a weekend, if you go with something else it could take all summer, and you would need a different outdrive, so "on the cheap" is pretty much out the window.

Along with what others have stated you would have to make sure there is room for a V motor in the boat. I would just get another 3.0l. If you want more power sell the boat and buy one with the engine you want.
