Mercruiser 305 V8, 230 HP.....Quicksilver throttle...Alpha One outdrive

I just recently got my boat up and running, engine seemed to be running fine, ran a full tank through it. The RPM's seemed to be running higher than normal on the tach. but engine sounded ok (to me, no engine expert). A few times the tach was reading idle at around 1800. Also, when flooring it out of a no wake zone with only 4 people in the boat it jumped up to around 5400 rpms which I think for my engine the max is supposed to be 4600 rpm and it's never jumped that high before. I also noticed at cruising speed while already planed out the tach seemed to bounce down like it may have been stuck. I was wondering if this may be a throttle cable adjustment issue since sometimes while shifting back and forth from forward to reverse while parking my throttle sticks and I have to push or pull on it pretty hard to get it to shift. The boat is an '87 so nothing would surprise me.

Howdy, and Welcome to iBoats!

Unless the RPM of the engine sounds like it's jumping (like the tach), it's an electrical problem in the tach or wiring...

Rick

Also, by the way, you need to fix the throttle and/or shift cable issues that are causing the sticking problem before you hurt someone or damage the drive.
