Re: Engine temperature?

Hey Mark, glad to hear you got a new engine, i read your old thread and felt terrible
I'm afraid i'm not a mechanic but have worked on my boat and i have learned that you must take the thermostat, and test it in water before you install it in the engine, also on my engine there were two of them and that's because mine has FWC
I dont know about your engine, mine is a 140-160 f
my temp should be right at 140, if it's above 160 it's not running right (in my case the thermostat was opening at over 200f that made it run either cold or hot. I went to the dollar store and got a thermometer.
Hope this helps.

Just curious, how are these Infrared thermometers able to read the temperature of the engine water rather than the temperature of the area on the engine block to which you aim them?

They are able to read it because the difference between the two is very close to, if not, zero.

Re: Engine temperature?

I installed a temp auto guage(mechanical) from Walmart for $12.00 directly into where the sending unit was(it comes with a few adapters). I'm in sweet water myself and have kept this unit in for two seasons even though my initial thought was just to use it temporarily to check the real temp and then put back the original. Works like a charm.

I had initially bought it because I suspected my guage was off after replacing the impeller, thermostat, and even the sending unit.

I have also used the meat thermometer. You basically pull your main hose going to the thermostat and stick it in. Watch out, the water is HOT!!! I prefer the above Walmart way.
