Engine Temperature

I bought a 1998 Glastron 205 FS 5.0L Mercruiser last year with a new motor. I had some carb troubles, then blew the head gaskets after 1 1/2 hours on motor (the head bolts were not tightened from the factory). They replaced the motor and I am currently breaking in new motor (about 6 hours currently, no wide open throttle or towing). My problem is the temp gauge does not rise, shows the engine is running cold. How do I check if it's working right? Could it just be the thermostat is stuck open? I boat in the Wisconsin river, mostly sand bottom. Should I check or replace the thermostat? I don't want to blow another motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Engine Temperature

Howdy,

Uh, is there a thermostat in the housing?

If there is, you should probably have a close look at it. It may be stuck open. If it isn't, drop it in a pan of hot water with a thermometer and see when it does.

If it works ok, then put your hand on the housing and intake manifold and see if it gets warm, if it does, check out your temp gage.

Regards,

Rick

Re: Engine Temperature

I just took off the thermostat housing this morning. Water would run straight through the thermostat, meaning it's either stuck open or sand may be stuck in there. I put it in boiling water and thermostat does work, but water is still getting past it. My next question is can I purchase a new housing that would enable me to change the thermostat without replacing another housing? This housing (Mercruiser 305 V8) has no way to replace the thermostat, its one piece. I am used to auto engines and I have never seen a housing that you can't replace the thermostat. I am still trying to get thermostat unclogged.

Re: Engine Temperature

I brought the housing in and it was held in by an o ring. Popped right out, just didn't realize it. I replaced the thermostat and it's running a little warmer now, 125 deg on muffs. Hopefully it will better in the lake. thanks for the help.
