Engine Ticking after a day of riding...

I have a MAXUM SC 2300, engine as far as I know is a:
4 bbl, carburated
5.7L, V8, I/O Mercruiser

Recently, for some reason, after a of riding, I have been experiencing a clicking/ticking sound coming from my engine.

I know there could be a thousand ways a "ticking" can sound like. But I don't know how else to describe it.

The tick is a rythmic, and constant clicking... in intervals if 1-2 ticks per second.

Based upon some searching on iboats forum, I have found many experts on here feel it is probably related to the "timing." The tick is similar to a sound a spark makes when for example I pull the spark plug wire and hold it against a ground.

When I asked my marina mechanic about the timing... he said that most boats usually don't have a timing issue, and that my tick is unlikely due to the timing... Since he says, my tick does not occur at the beginning of my ride, and only occurs at the end of my day of riding the boat...

Does anyone have any ideas on what it might be....???

could be your rockers, tappets? boats do have timing issues but its not likely to be the problem. unless you moved something or something is on its way out. do you hear it on both sides of the engine or just one? do you have fresh oil in the block?

At all speeds? Idle? Could be a lifter, when was the last time you had an oil change? Could also be a loose rocker or an exhaust leak.

May need oil change cuz oil is breaking down or may need heavier oil.

Yeah, as a matter of fact, I haven't changed the oil in a while... So, I will do that... and post back... I just thought it was an electrical issue, since the ticking was so similar to a electrical sparking tick....

Engine oil suggests a mechanical ticking as opposed to an electrical ticking... but okay... will do as I am told and post back...

thank you...

I had an ticking sound comming from rear of engine this year, turned out to be exhaust flaps. Try to check if possible, I had local wrench remove lower to find noise (thought it was in gearcase) and there in the exhaust was half a flap. good luck.

An electrical ticking is different than a mechanical ticking.

Have heard loose spark plugs 'tick', too.
