Engine Trim?!

Just bought a 1996 MerCruiser 4.3L V6. Took it out for my first boat trip into the bay and was having a blast when all the sudden I ran into shallow waters. Chopped up my propeller which I know all ready I have to change, but my trim doesn't seem to go up as high as it used to. It still does go up an down but when it gets about halfway up you can hear the motor stop. Nothing is bent and the fluid is topped off. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Engine Trim?!

does it have a seperate "trailer trim" switch? most newer boats have a trim switch then a trailer switch to raise it the rest of the way when its on the trailer, but you dont use it while operating.

Those switches can also be part of the same button. If you only press it in so far, it will do normal trim, push the button all the way in, and it will operate "trailer trim".

The trim system is a pretty solid part of the boat, I would have a hard time believing you ruined your trim pump/cylinders by hitting a submerged object with out ripping the lower unit off. I'm guess the trim is still good.

Have you checked the trim fluid level?

Hey guys sorry it took me so long to get back. Well on the throttle it has a trip switch for up and down. Before i took the boat out , I could raise the engine a few feet off the ground. After the accident the prop only sits off the ground about a foot. Just enough to trailer it around. No pistons are bent and the fluids are topped off.

If the motor stops, it is electrical. Try the trailer button. Bottom right corner of the 3000 controller (assuming you have this one).
