engine trouble help

I have a GM 153 in line four cylinder with a mercruser outdrive. THe motor runs well but when shifting into gear it jerks extremely hard. I believe the engine is idleing to high but i was wondering if it could be the shift cable or the shift assembly. I have trouble going into and getting back out of reverse as well as trouble going into forward. please help...

Maybe adjust the shift mechanism and cables. Manuals are in the "adults" section of the forum.

I believe the engine is idleing to high

What RPM are you seeing with engine idling, in gear, at operating temperature?

idle is to high or your cutout switch is not working.
