Re: WOT Fluctuations

Could be a spun prop hub. From my reading when they go that's usually it but maybe yours is letting go...then catching again?? Mark the prop and the shaft with a sharpie. Make the situation you describe happen again. Then check to see if your marks are still aligned.
Got it. Will check tomorrow thanks!

Re: Engine trouble shooting

The throttle is one of the first things I will be looking at bonzoscott. I am very interested to see what the WOT plates are looking like.
I am merely saying: Engine not running - push throttle (in neutral) to WOT, then look down the throat of carb and verify that the throttle plates are perfectly vertical. In other words, opening all the way. If they are not vertical, you may need cable adjustment. If that is the case, send me a PM.

Re: Engine trouble shooting

Just watched your video and I don't think you are getting anywhere near WOT. I believe you have too much prop. Other thing to consider is the age of the boat. You stated you should be 'flying' with a 5.0L. Maybe a new one but possibly not this 19 year old carbed motor.

Re: WOT Fluctuations

What is your WOT? Might you be hitting the RPM limiter? Is it carbed or injected?

Just responded to your other thread, please ignore it. Make sure your timing is correct, both static and full advance. Any manual should give you those numbers. Dont go throwing parts at it untill you know the basics are sound, timing, compression, cables adjusted, clean flame arrestor, clean fuel filters, good spark plugs.

Went out today to change out my cap and wires because they are all gummed up. Did a one for one swap of the new wires onto the old cap and then a one for one swap with new wires and onto new cap. Something went wrong. Now the engine is not runningh good at all and barely starts. What do I do?

Wow 4Winns, way too many posts on the same subject. It's kind of like spamming. You could have stuck with a continuation of your original one. You'd get better results.

Maybe it is time to bite the bullet and consult a knowledgeable engine mechanic?

Re: Engine trouble shooting

Your gonna need to drill holes into your stringers below deck and check for dry wood shavings. Also drill holes into transom without going trough the fiber glass hull and again checking for dry shavings. Many others will chime in and provide the proper drill depth and specifics. Check around in the restorations threads its got some good reads.

That 95 Sundowner has fiberglass stringers with a foam core. DON'T drill them. There isn't any wood in there.

Ouch that would have been bad huh? Sorry for that info I provided before I knew the steuctural layout of that particular boat. Good thing you didn't listen and jump out there right away! :).

Re: Engine trouble shooting

If any of you are still interested in the ACTUAL trouble shooting going on here. Turns out there actually two firing orders for the engine model number for the 1995 Ford OMC 5.0 joint venture period. The tag on my engine wasn't the correct firing order. (Go figure) So because I was going off of that wrong tag (data plate) 4 out of 8 cylinders were not firing on schedule. I read the alternate firing order in another iboat thread. Now that I am firing on time I tuned the carb, verified my throttle plates, checked my compression and all were around 150psi. I am still having WOT throttle issues though. 3800 RPM AND 25 MPH. I'm gonna pull the boat back out. Power wash it. Change the prop and check fuel pressure. Thanks for all of your help. I appreciate the time you take to read this long and "confusing" thread. Lets keep it positive though.
