Took boat out today and suddenly felt like it went into neutral and noticed smoke from the doghouse. Turned it off and looked like smoke from back of engine. Its an omc. When started back up didn't want to start but it died trying to go into gear and engine kept smoking. It sounded like belt let go but the belts all are intact. Any ideas of what is wrong? Had to be towed in.

Bluish Oil smoke? Whitish steam type smoke? Did you check oil level before you left? What did the gauges (water temp and oil pressure) read as you were under way? Didn't look? For Shame! Gauges are there for a reason. Any signs of oil leakage? Since we have absolutely no information on the engine (4 cyl, V6, V8, Ford, Chevy, etc) other than smoke we can't be much help. If the smoke you noticed was whitish rather than darker, chances are you overheated the engine due a malfunctioning cooling system (water pump). Blown head gaskets are the result and since there may be more serious damage, worst case is an engine rebuild.
