Just the engine model year. A holdover method of engine ID from the OMC/Volvo joint venture days with OMC's method of ID.
Just throw in a couple of meaningless letters to designate the model year.

MD, then HU, NC, LK, BY, WT, EF see what I mean?

I have always wondered how they come up with the letters. I was sort of hoping that it would be some sort of anagram that says "Mercruiser sucks" or something like that :)

Re: Engine turns but won't start

Don, are there any guides to checking/replacing the impeller for my engine? I searched around all the PDFs and threads and couldn't find anything on it. I've heard it's simple, but I'd rather have something to go by before I attempt it. Thanks.

It's in the engine service manual (cooling section).

Thanks. The PDFs aren't searchable which is why I wasn't finding anything.

So the impeller is in the raw water pump? I thought it was in the outdrive somewhere.

Why did you suddenly jump to the impeller? What about the no spark condition? Water pump won't be needed if the engine doesn't run.

No no, it had nothing to do with the issue I'm having. It's just something people always say to check and replace regularly, and since I don't know its condition I figured I should check it out if I'm going to be in the engine compartment anyway. That's all. More of a preventive thing than thinking it has anything to do with the engine not running.

Re: Engine turns but won't start

Don't have time to go up this weekend to work on it, so I called the boat shop to come pick it up and figure it out. Will post an update once they get back to me with a diagnosis. I can't wait to hear what it is.

They called yesterday and said it's something in the ignition wiring. They hooked it up with a separate ignition system bypassing the boat's and it started right up. Said it will take some time to trace the problem.

Not looking forward to the bill.

Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, there isn't that much to check.
Ignition switch, fuse, kill switch, and a few connections.

Re: Engine turns but won't start

They say it was a blown breaker to the fuel pump. Doesn't make sense, because when we were on the water we jumped the fuel pump with a wire and it still didn't start. In any case, they say it's fixed, I picked it up today, and they only charged me for an hour and a half of labor. They also cleaned up the wiring under the helm and hooked up my stereo to a correct power lead. Planning on taking a trip tomorrow morning with the kids. Here's to hoping everything goes ok.

Thanks very much for the help Don and others. It's much appreciated.
