Started motor. It started right away. Turned key to off position, engine contined running.looking at schematics I first disconnected the altenator, started motor. It ran. then I went to turn it off, it then turned off like it was supposed too. I replaced the ignition switch. I had the alternator checked.. it was ok. The Starting Relay was also checked and it was ok. I have an OMC Cobra Outdrive (1986) Scorpian 230 ChrisCraft. I replaced on the alternator, 2 prong plug. the old one had wires that were bad. So I thought that maybe I had the wires crossed or reversed on the alternator. So I reversed them... but still the same outcome. It starts up but won't stop. Anyone out there have any suggestions or knowledge about an electrical situation as mentioned above, please post a reply. Thanks.

Just had the same problem a week or so ago with a GM alt. in a jet boat. Replaced the 2 wire connector to the alt. and you couldn't shut it off. Reversed the two wires and fixed it.
Maybe you crossed something when you replaced the ignition switch?

With the key in the "off" position, what is the voltage reading at the + side of the coil? I think you are somehow getting voltage from the solenoid/starter that sholdn't be there with the key in the "off" position. You either have a short or are miswired.......JK

and the problem is?

most people can't stay running :p

all gasoline engines shut off by stopping electricity from reaching the ignition coil(s).

It all comes down to wire from battery + to ignition switch 'batt' terminal. When igition key is in 'run', current flows from 'batt' to 'ign' on ignition switch and wire runs from 'ign' terminal on switch to coil + terminal (or runs to relay which allows current to flow to coil +).

either the alt is bad, disconnect all the alt wires and retest, or the solenoid is sending the voltage to the coil .most have only 1 wire to trip it, some used the other side to supply full voltage only while cranking.

thanks for the replys ,beleive I HAVE ASHORT IN THE wire coming off the oil sending unit that was a start what was funny was th wire coming fron the alt. running to the ign. switch then ran to the oil pressure gauge this is the + SIDE of the alt. following the schematic theres a wire coming off the tachometer this leads straight too the negative side of guess where the coil I,M not positive yet but I have all the wires put back the way they should be and IT starts and stops like its supposed too. thanks for all your useful advice if this doesnt work you will be hearing about it I PROMISE thanks again capt.
