Started motor. It started right away. Turned key to off position, engine contined running.looking at schematics I first disconnected the altenator, started motor. It ran. then I went to turn it off, it then turned off like it was supposed too. I replaced the ignition switch. I had the alternator checked.. it was ok. The Starting Relay was also checked and it was ok. I have an OMC Cobra Outdrive (1986) Scorpian 230 ChrisCraft. I replaced on the alternator, 2 prong plug. the old one had wires that were bad. So I thought that maybe I had the wires crossed or reversed on the alternator. So I reversed them... but still the same outcome. It starts up but won't stop. Anyone out there have any suggestions or knowledge about an electrical situation as mentioned above, please post a reply. Thanks.
<br /><br /><br />all gasoline engines shut off by stopping electricity from reaching the ignition coil(s).<br /><br />It all comes down to wire from battery + to ignition switch 'batt' terminal. When igition key is in 'run', current flows from 'batt' to 'ign' on ignition switch and wire runs from 'ign' terminal on switch to coil + terminal (or runs to relay which allows current to flow to coil +).
