Re: Engine vs. Motor

If I remember correctly. A engine converts a fuel into mechanical energy. A motor converts one form of energy into another form of energy. ie: Gas/Jet engine drives a shaft/gear. An electric motor converts electric to a shaft/gear. Or vise versa a shaft/gear converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. (Generator/Alternator) I'm sure some engineer will explain this a lot better than I, and I hope my memory isn't too far off. ;-)
Mike

An engine uses fuel to cause motion...

A motor can use fuel or other forms of energy to cause motion....

Either are correct for our purposes..... :)

Engine would be a subset of Motor, with the distinction being driven by fuel..

Motor

n.
Something, such as a machine or an engine, that produces or imparts motion.

A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power.

A motor vehicle, especially an automobile: “It was a night of lovers. All along the highway... motors were parked and dim figures were clasped in revery” (Sinclair Lewis).

Engine

n.

A machine that converts energy into mechanical force or motion.
Such a machine distinguished from an electric, spring-driven, or hydraulic motor by its use of a fuel.

A mechanical appliance, instrument, or tool: engines of war.
An agent, instrument, or means of accomplishment.
A locomotive.
A fire engine.
