My evenrude 50 hp outboard motor starts right up and goes at slow speed very well. When I attempt to speed up it bucks and kicks and slows down. When I throttle down it runs fine. What could be wrong? I have never had any problem with this motor before. Please give me any suggestion you might have.

Re: engine will not get up to high speed

rayman,
I had the same problem last week with all the rain in NJ. It was bucking real bad trying to go above 3500 rpm. It was a fairly nice day so left the motor cover off for a few hours hoping to let it dry out from all the moisture from the previous week. I went back late afternoon, took it out and all was fine again. I know two of my coils are real old and decrepit so I should really change those.

A situation like this could also be fuel related. Have you tried manually choking it while trying to throttle up?

Hope all this helps you. Good luck.

rayman,
glad you found the problem. the power pack should be some capacitors epoxied into a housing and capacitors are like that. they can hold some juice and discharge some juice at the right time when timing is correct but not enough juice when mucho juice is required. I always thought power packs are a go no go piece but apparently it can be good enough to start an engine but not much more. do I make any sense? altighty then.
