I have a 1987 force 85hp on a bayliner capri. I took it to the lake and ran it for about 1/2 hour and stopped to do some fishing. I decided to move to another location so I put it in neutral and the starter/solenoid just kept spinning on the flywheel and stripped the starter gear. I decided that the battery was still strong and pulled off the outboard cover and turn the ignition switch to the on position and used a cord about 5 feet long hoping to start it maually. The flywheel would not turn easy. In the past when the battery was low, I could start the engine using the cord with no pulling resistance. Q? What gives? Did the engine overheat or is there more to it?

Re: Engine will not kick over.

Could be damage to the powerhead from overheating (should've set-off the overheat alarm) or carbon behind a ring caused cylinder damage. Could be a gearcase problem from hitting something or low gearlube. Other things too, but those are the first things I'd look at.
