Re: engine will not reach speed

bjcsc ; I'm not sure I beleive the engine had to be under water because their is water marks half way up where the seat are installed and the engine is beneath the floor not in a dog house. so I can only assume it was under water I don't know for how long. Thats why I wonder if the gas filter / water seperator needs to be replaced more often, I did drain the tank and refilled it half tank with fresh gas about 2 -3 weeks ago I didn't add any additives to the gas, just reg. unleaded gas...
I understand what you are saying about replacing the carb with another one but the boat also came thru with this type of carb so I figured why keep getting fustrated with the holley. I hope the quadrajet just needs fine tuning to get it to idle, also I am going to check all the electrical connection around and to the engine, clean and tighten them, charge the batteries too. I hope this will help and then I will see what happens then...
crossing my figures.
If there is anymore advice for me please give it to me I need all the help I can get.
Thanks
Rich

Freddyray21; "Don't know on your boat, but on mine there is a wire running from the starter solenoid to the coil to give it more voltage when you are cranking the starter." How can I tell if this wire is sending the correct amount of current.

How can I tell if this wire is sending the correct amount of current.

Pull the coil wire out of the distributor and ground it so it won't spark, then just measure the VOLTAGE (not current) on the main starter terminal (A) and the (D) terminal while the engine is cranking. Then measure the voltage at the + terminal on the coil while cranking. They should all be seeing the same voltage.

Thanks Don S. I will try this sometime between tomorrow and the next day ( tomorrow is my birthday so I think the kids will have me going all day )
Thanks

Re: engine will not reach speed

The test results are: the the volts were the same at the starter but ( 9 + ) but not at the coil ( 6 + ) I know the batteries are low so I will be charging them tonight and retesting it again tomorrow.

Re: engine will not reach speed

If you are only showing 9 volts at the starter while cranking, then it won't start because it turning too slow. Once you get the batteries charged up (and load tested) and are getting the proper cranking rpm it will probably start.

Ok. what do you mean by load tested they are both new, do I need to have this done?
I will be trying it today.
Thanks

It's amazing what a clean connection will do.... I cleaned the batteries wires and starter wires and it started right up just need to fine tune it and I think I will be able to take it out this season THANK YOU all for al the help.......d:)

Re: engine will not reach speed

Well that was very short lived:'(, I took the boat out to test it in the lake and guess what , IT STARTED ONCE AND THEN IT WOULDN"T START:|........ I checked the connection and they where clean and tight, I tested the coil and it showed 7+ volts at the positive side. what the hell is going on is there some relay or module that controls this, how do I fix this..... I checked for spark and I am getting spark.
man I really getting sick of this

Re: engine will not reach speed

7+ volts is probably okay to run The resistor wire or ballast resistor will drop the volts to the coil and this is normal. Try running a wire through a switch from the battery to the hot lead on the coil. When you are trying to start it flip the switch on to supply 12 v to the coil if if starts turn the switch off and see if if keeps running. If it does I would suspect the wire from the starter to the hot side of the coil has a break in it and only works at times.

Re: engine will not reach speed

here is the update:
I had 1 battery that was defective so I replaced it, I installed the rochester carb. it started and runs at idles above 1000 rpm, but just dies at anything less than that. I was trying to set the idle and after numerous starts and stalls the battery got low. I had to start it about 12 times or so.
1st question Is this normal for the batteries to drain that soon?
2nd question the batteries are reading 13.4 volts while running at 1200 rpm but the guage on the boat reads 10 - 11volts and just under 10 when not running?
3rd question what advice on how to get the carb adjusted right?
4th question how is the batteries supposed to be run to the batteryswitch ( 2 batteries )?
I would really love to take the boat out this sunday so please let me know what I can do please...
Thanks
Rich

Re: engine will not reach speed

one it sounds like you still need to set the idle mixture screws on the carb. you have to adjust them lean or rich to make it run right. start by turning them all the way in slowly untll they stop (don't force them do it easy) then turn them out 1.5 turns. Start it up then turn them in or out in synch until it idles smoothly.
Second. You might not have the batteries fully charged. are they marine deep cycle? You really need to trickle charge them al least overnight 12-14 hours to really get them fully charged.
I don't know on your particular battery switch. The only thing I ever ran with two batteries was an old Volkswagon van and it had a solenoid when you turned the key on that let the camper battery charge when the motor was running.
