I hit a rock in a lake the other day. Just the skeg hit. 30 seconds after I started lossing power (only quarter power at full throttle). I stopped to check the engine and when I started back up I had to put the choke on and quickly snap into forward to keep the enging running. The leg got hot and notice the oil was contaminated when I got to shore. The water pump was still working any idea. Do you think I damaged my motor itself.

Cheers

Sounds like you bent or broke something.

What was the oil contaminated with?

The oil was milky color, suspect just water (thats enough). nothing inside seemed bent (not the drive shaft or prop shaft, gears did not seem damaged). I was just talking to someone and he said I might have just nocked my gear and drive shaft out of place a little and it might be good when I put it back together. However I did order the lower gear housing seal kit, should be here by tuesday.

I have never heard of a lower unit getting hot before. If it did something got messed up down there. When you have it apart verify the prop shaft and the drive shaft are still straight. If it was the power head that was hot I would suspect that you damaged the impeller or knocked the water tube out of the grommet.

The very lower unit did not get hot, it was the leg between the engine and the lower unit. If I could draw a picture I could show you exactly where. but what you said could make sense. I took it apart and everything seems fine, just waiting for the seals to come in before I put it back together. I order some other parts to, but it will take a while as they have to come in from the States.

Cheers,

Your motor is a 1991. Sounds like the motor leg you are describing. Here is a blow up.
MOTOR LEG
Seems wierd it would get hot there. There is really nothing in there to get hot.

Yes that is the part. This is the first motor I have owned so my experience is very minimum. When I put my hand on it, it was very hot after I hit the rock and drove to the launch. I also heard a noise I never heard before, could not tell were it was coming from though. Still confused on where I lost the power though. What I do know is that it would not idle in neutral and there was a big power loss at full bore trying to get home. I have to wait until I get the seals tomorrow (hopefully) and put the hose to it in the back yard. Only the skeg hit, hopefully I did not damage the motor, can,t see that but not too familiar.

Cheers,

My guess is that your water system failed after the hit. When a motor overheats it will bog down and die and not start till it cools down. Aluminum is a good conductor of heat so maybe the heat from the power head transfered to the motor leg. When you get it restarted it would be a good idea to get a compression test done on the motor. If it did overheat and caused damage that test should tell you if the damage is severe.

Well got it together again, and brought it out in the water for the test, same thing. I start it in high idle and she will run. Once I put it in neutral she cuts out (as soon as the revs go down for neutral). When I shift in gear real fast from high idle I can get it going but still very slow. Speed varies, almost sounds like not getting enough fuel. Off to the shop I go tomorrow for the complete test and inspection.

Will keep you informed

Cheers,

Re: Engine will not remain on in neutral.

Its official, I broke the engine pretty good, I will require a new or used power head. Apparently I cracked something or the ring. I will get more info from the DC marine here in Kingston. Looks like I may be better off getting a new motor some day.

Cheers
