I have a 1974 85hp Evinrude that I just installed a new key switch for. All wires are connected according to the wiring diagram that came with the switch but the engine will not shut off when I turn the key to the off position. I have to choke the engine to shut it off. Any Ideas?

Re: engine will not shut off with key

when trying to figure out why my motor wouldnt start. i cut the black and yellow wire witch to my undersdtanding is a kill wire to protect the engine in case of low oil . water in the fuel /engine over heating. after i cut the wire the engine would run fine but would not shut off unless i grounded that kill wire to a screw nearbye..or chock it.others may be able to give you more details.but sounds like that wire may be grounding out somewhere.or not connected correctly.

Do you have a multimeter or test light that you can use to check the switch and make sure the pins are doing the right thing (connected/not connected at the right times)?

The black/yellow is the kill circuit (unrelated to overtemp or low oil), when connected to ground, it grounds the powerpack.

Your keyswitch should have 2 "M" terminals, one should have a black wire (ground) and the other should have the black/yellow wire (kill), and those two terminals should test positive for continuity when the switch is "off".

If this is the case, then the kill circuit must have a fault in the wiring harness.

I just had an identical problem with an aftermarket switch I installed. Turned out when switched to Off ("m" to "m") , it was not activating the kill switch. I ended up purchasing an OEM part locally and am trying to return the bad switch.

Re: engine will not shut off with key

I have a 69 that I replaced the ignition switch with an aftermarket, which I believe had a short in it. What happened is it burned out the diode behind the dash. The diode allows current to the electric shift solenoid to shift it in neutral while cranking so the boat doesn't lurch forward. When the diode burned out it allowed current to backflow to feed the ignition.
