Hi Folks,

Newbie here.
I cannot get my 87 90HP Johnson to start without carb cleaner, once it starts, it will run forever.
I know it isnt recommended to use the cleaner as it has no lubericant in it :(

I can wait for 30 mioniutes r so after t is started shut it down for an hour, and it will start back up.
If it sits for more than a few hours, I amback to the problem.

To start
prime the carb with the ball
turn key to on
count to 10
let it turn over
I usually wait for 30 to 60 seconds to give it a chance to start.

Even if I remove the cover, play witht he throttle manually while someone else turns her over, no dice.
Seems the only way to start is with the carb cleaner :(

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance !

Re: Engine will not start without carb cleaner

Starting procedure:

Pump the primer bulb up firm
Raise fast idle lever about 1/2 way
Turn the key to the ON position
Push the key in and hold for a count of 5
With the key pushed in, start the engine. When it starts, let key out. You may have to bump the key IN a couple times to keep it running..

Your problem is that you are not pushing the key in to activate the primer solenoid that enriches the system...

okay try this.....when you turn the key over to start, while you're waiting 10 seconds, push the key in (away from you, toward the console), and hold it there while you wait.................
