Hello-well its always something isnt it-I have a 2000 240 searay with a 5.7 EFI mercruiser. It wont start. when I turn the key all I get is the beep and nothing else happens-I have power to everthing else -battery charger reading down to zero-but nothing happens -last year it would not start and it was the cut off switch/saftey shut off switch-so I ended up bypassing that switch and have not had a problem since. I checked that connection again and it was fine. so I dont know where to begin -and Im not much of a mechanic so if you can explain a plan off action in simple language that would be great--any takers before I have to call a mechanic Thanks !!

Does that mean the engine doesn't even crank with the starter? Or the starter turns the engine but it doesn't start?

Re: engine will not start

My first target would be the connector on the starting motor solenoid.
Follow the heavy wire from the battery to the starter, and check the connection (usually a heavy copper fitting).

It will be bolted to the starter. Use a wrench and remove the connector, then clean off all the green oxidation with a wire brush, or similar tool.

Be sure to wiggle the connector to see if it's brittle and possibly broken.

If all seems fine, re-assemble.

Won't hurt to check all the other wires connected to the starter also, in a similar fashion.

Let us know if that solves the issue.

As you are fasing the engine there should be a circuit braker on the right side of the throttle body with a either A red push in button with a 50 amp on it I believe or it could be a new style braker that will have a arm on it and you will need to lift it up in place, try that. some times you need to push the button in hard. Also make 100% sure you are not in gear at all, If in gear it will not turn over.

I'm making some assumptions about what's in your boat but bear with me and adjust as needed.

Check the ignition switch with a meter. Make sure it's working by seeing if the "S" terminal has 12 volts when you turn the key to crank and the "I" terminal has 12 when you have it in the on/run position.

If so, check back on the starter assist solenoid and see if you have 12 volts to the "S" terminal when cranking. Then check if the wire from it to the starter has 12 volts as well.

If it's all showing OK, your starter is bad.

Almost forgot:

Be sure to disconnect the battery first!
You don't want to short that wire/connector to the motor, or you'll get fireworks.

Re: engine will not start

On the starter solenoid there should be a yellow and red stippled wire or a wire connected to the S terminal this wire should have power when the key is held in the start position.

You could jump or bridge the big wire to the S and see if the engine cranks

You could also hold the key in the start position while moving the shift leaver to see if you can cause the Mic=ro switch to make contact.

Re: engine will not start

Instead of all this trial and error, look everyplace and try this troubleshooting, do you have a DVM and know how to use it, along with the service manual and wiring diagram?
If not, you are in for a lot of frustration.
