Engine wiring harness too long.

I put a new outboard on my boat along with all new gauges and engine wiring harness. The harness is at least 5' too long. I rolled up the extra as neatly as I could but it still looks like a tangled birds nest. Logic tells me to leave it alone but then I see all the pretty work that people have done on here and it makes me wonder if I should cut out the extra and splice the wires back together to clean it up a bit or is that just asking for trouble. If I were to cut and splice it what kind of connectors should I use?

Ayuh,... Don't....

More splices, equals More Problems...

DO NOT CUT AND SPLICE.

Without seeing your boat, or what size the harness is or for what, it's hard to make a suggestion, but instead of a bunch of small coils, try a single Z shaped fold. Wire tied under something.

It's the harness for the system check gauge, tach, tilt...... I figured that's the response, so logic wins again, but on the resto and general boating threads I see a lot of gripes about wiring rats nests. That's what I have, it's more than a handful. I currently have it wrapped as nicely as possible and stuffed under the console but I'll try the Z idea. Thanks for the help.
