I have a 1969 Sears boat with a 1978 MERC 80hp. I think it is a gound issue, but where do I look for it. Motor runs great and does not idle high. I just can't shut it off unless I run it out of gas. Starts right up with no issues. I am just clueless and trying to learn about boats.

Any help would be great and thanks in advance for your time.

Look for a orange wire, goes from the switch box and forward to your ignition switch, to stop the engine...connect it to ground (black wire ).

Your ignition switch should do this when turned off.

Thanks for the help. I figured out the I was missing a pin on the motor side where my wiring harness is installed. Thanks for the help and the response.:):)

Disconnecting the battery might have fried your rectifier. Better check it out.

Your ign. is ADI and grounds out to shut the engine off, so you could have a bad switch or broken wire.
