Engine is question is a 115hp 78' Johnson outboard 2-stroke.

When the warm up lever is up it'll start, idle (hight of course) and if I give it a little gas my pushing the carb linkage its rev up, down, basically run like its supposed to.

when I move the warm up lever down it dies.

So I put the lever back up, give it a little gas (manually my pushing linkage) and push warm-up lever down, it dies.

It will not stay running without that warm-up lever up.

So any idea whats going on?

Also, Its hard to start sometimes.

Guy at the boat shop said a simple carb test is to put your palm over one of the carbs and it should squirt gas onto your palm, which it does. and it spits gas when you crank with choke up. So his best guess is the carbs are functioning properley

Re: engine wont run unless the warm-up lever is up.

The jets in the carburetors are all fixed jets and not adjustable. The warm up lever advances the timing a lot and opens the throttle plates a little. Ideally, the engine should be allowed to warm to approximately 105 degrees F. which is the point at which your thermostats open. As you have found, you cannot shift into gear without lowering the warm up lever. If your thermostats don't work, it is harder to keep the engine running smoothly. You may find that bumping the key in a few time while idling will help to keep the engine running until it is warm enough.

The warm up lever and timing advance lever must be synchronized so that the throttles open together at the correct time. It is a necessary process to "link and synch" according to the manual for your specific engine.

If you don't have the service manual, I do, so send me a PM and I will try to get some information that may help.

As a general rule, you want to have the numbers from your compression test available for the forum members, along with the type of spark plugs and the results of your spark test.

I think the engine is at operating temp.

I had it idling (a little quick) for a good 10 minutes I'm sure that made it operating temp.

The temp from the pee stream is nick thick and constant. and it is just as cold as the hose water going in

Why do you think that your thermostats are working (if you have them)?

Tell-tales (pee streams) tell you that the water pump is working, and absolutely nothing about the engine cooling system and thermostats.

Sounds like it needs a link and synch to me.
