I'm working on a late 70s 70HP Johnson outboard. It has been in storage for a couple of years. I got it running but now if I turn the key off it won't stop, won't even stop if I unhook the main electrical cable. what could be causing this?

Re: engine won't stop

you need to check at the keyswitch,be sure you have a ground going to the switch, there should be a black wire with a yel stripe, that will put negative to the powerpack, thus killing engine, its possible the keyswitch is bad.You can take a ground wire from another source like a guage and touch it to the blk .yel.That sould stop it.But also check the wire where it goes to the powerpack,it may have become undone, that would prevent the kill circut from working.Un doing the main harness insures the kill circut from working
