Engine wont turn over...

I just took apart the Contols on my boat it is a Johnson 1977 70 hp....

My problem is I started off just changing the steering in it....

Well took apart the contols due to the fact i wanted my fuel gauge to come on when the Switch did....

Well Now that it is apart my Engine will not turn over with the key ...


Help I'm losing my mind.....

You may have blown the fuse. Look at the starter solenoid for a 20 amp cylindrical fuse in a red connector.

Checked that and fuse was fine.....

We tried to hook up fuel gauge to key switch and we have nada for fuel gauge ....

Engine wont turn over either....

Took solenoid off and wanna check it but how do you check that....

I'm at a loss.....It turned over fine til and all we took out was the steering cable......

My wiring in my boat is an absoulte mess....

?? Also when I took apart the controls....and tried to put them back together there is a ball and spring if i put the ball in first then the spring stops it from going together and when i put the spring in first the ball holds it up....

How do you get this back together ??

Anyone have pictures of this....

How about a wiring diagram of the Johnson controls....

Motor is 1977 70 HP EL77s.....

There are two types of side mounted control in 1977, the one with a toggle for the choke and one that you push in the key to choke. Which do you have?

It has an engine warm up lever and a choke when you push key in

Got the motor running...It was the safety switch inside the controls that was broken.. Which prevented it from turning over turns over fine now....

Now onto the rest of the NIGHTMARE....
