Engine year / model and predictions?

I have an older (1985-1990?) Evinrude 20HP manual start outboard. It's 2 cycle, tiller, and the serial # is 506705. I would like to find out the year and model # if that's possible. This engine was my father's, and I don't think that it has been run since 1991. I am wondering about any potential repairs, adjustments, and so forth I should expect to encounter as I try to get it up and running. I understand that it will probably need some work...any suggestions on either of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

My book for Evinrude Motors uses the model # for the year and not the serial # like Mercury. Change the impeller and lower end oil. If it starts, go for it and if not check the spark and clean the Carb. By the way 90 is not so old. Good luck

Once you get the model number go to this web site and you will be able to look up the year.

Outboard Motor Serial Numbers

Cheers
Mike

Hi mercator
Along with what Ron said to do above, If the Motor has not been run since '91, you need to do a few things first before you try to start it. Put a teaspoon of TCW-3 oil in each spark plug hole and turn the engine over by hand a few turns to lubricate the cylinder walls. You will most likely need to rebuild the Carb(s), as it will be gummed up with old fuel(Varnish). You will want to get a rebuild kit for this job, as the seals will be shot in the Carb. Also replace the fuel line, connectors and primer bulb, as I'm sure they are brittle also. Get a new fuel tank or clean the old one out and use fresh fuel and oil(50:1) mix. Also, replace the spark plugs and check the wires for cracking. That's a good Motor and should be pretty much carefree once you get it going! Good Luck,

Hey, I appreciate your collective help and advice. I found the model number, and am pretty sure that it's an 85. Again, thanks for the counsel.
