the hole at the bottom LEFT of the top cylinder that is open, is for yout temperature SENDER, you do not hook up a temp guage to anything on the wiring harness... those tings are called temp sensors, and they are part of the features of the motor. like quick start, and the alarms. The black hex item with the 2 wires coming out of it under the top cylinder is the TEMP SENSOR.

Re: engine years

do you have the systems check tach, or a standard tach?

the system check tach has a large plug that goes into the back of the tach, maybe 8 pinds, and it has all the connections you need....BUT the harness at the control has an EXTRA purple and gray wire, in case you didnt have the system check tach and wanted to hook up a standard off market tach

yes, the gray would go to "S"

Re: engine years

I have a system check gauge seperate from the tach. DSC00622gg.jpg this is the plug that goes to the check gauge. the wires have been cut and do not run to the engine. . should the 95 harness have these same colour wires from the engine? I am not sure why they have been pulled from the boat only thing i can think of is they are not in the new harness does this gauge need power for the rest of them to work? I am thinking about pulling the system check gauge and installing a water temp gauge. Should the extra purple and gray wire be with the key switch? I can't find them.

Re: engine years

so, one thing at a time

you want to hook up a tach, that is not a systems check tach...right?

then you need to follow the harness that leads from the engine to the controls...somewhere hanging near the controls should be the EXTRA gray and purple wires you need for your tach...as well as a ground.

unless the harness is a total butcher job, you should find them somewhere near the control.

second, the temperature gauge is hooked to the purple wires to get power for the lights from the ignition( when you turn everything else on) and from the SENDER you need to go and buy! yes, there is nothing on your motor now that can send the temperature signal...you need to go BUY IT!.....sierra has them...they are hard to find....very hard.... it has to match the guage you buy....maybe it is possible that the sender comes with the guage you buy. The sender threads into the 1/8th pipe thread that is open on the head in your picture...just below the top cylinder and to the side.

it is POSSIBLE that the previous owner left the original harness in the boat and used and adapter to hook to his "new" wiring of the 1995 motor.

OR....

he trashed the harness and control as well and installed an older style control which accepts the older style harness from the motor....

i dont know...you need to find it out....just to have a clear picture....

the newer harness and controls use a few Duetsch plugs to connect...the older style connects mostly through the big red plug... MAYBE it also has a the "extra'" gra and purple wire.....NOT 100 % sure of that...usually the big red plug connects at the engine under the cover...then runs to the control....where the 'extra wires " are hanging.....

wireing can get really messed up , if guys cut and splice to 'fix" stuff...and dont label it

good luck

Re: engine years

Thanks bob, If i can't find the extra purple wire can i just splice into the key switch purple wire and run power to my gauges? and just ground them to something under the dash? the key is independent from the the controls and all wiring has been pulled from the boat. it's a mess in there.

Re: engine years

I thought you needed the grat wire as well...

and yes i guess, purple is purple they are all connected....

you should straighten all that out...... it will be a nightmare going forward to troubleshoot any issues

Re: engine years

I do need the grey wire as well. I am thinking if i cannot find that wire to just follow it from the rectifer and see where it goes possibly add on to it and go to tach? would i be able to do that with the purple from the rectifier too? or should I just take out the ignition and splice into the purple from there to run gauges.

Re: engine years

youll be able to find what you need up at the control in the harness...and most likley easily accessed....you should have to go all the way back to the motor. The gray wire is for only one thing.

the gh
gray wire is only for the tach as best i know.. it should come out of the harness before the big 8 pin system check plug at the dash.

thats if you have a post 96 harness
