enine surges and dies

hi, have an '85 OMC 305 5.0 liter with just rebuilt rochester quadrajet and new coil. Engine runs fine at low speed 5-10 mph but when going faster engine out of blue does a surge back and dies; takes a little cranking and pumping of throttle to get it started again but then runs fine again at low speed but did same thing whaen going a little faster. engine has pertronix module and was just tuned up and timing set to specs.

correct me if i am wrong ,omc shift assist modules are not compatible with a pertronics ign.kit

true...but that only affects the shift assist module and would give problems when shifting into forward and reverse because the assist module needs to cut power for a split second to allow for shifting, called pertronix and they have a wire and diode fix for that only if you get grinding when shifting, they said if you don't get the grinding there is no problem with using the kit.( most problems are with the cobra drives).
