Enough water coming out of tattle tale ?

Hello all,

I have been working on a Mercury 65 hp outboard 4 cyl model #2448761. After replacing the impellor and gaskets on pump housing and replacing water jacket gasket due to water leaking around the sparkplug I put it back together and fired it up !

Now I am finally getting water coming out of tattle tale, but it is only a small steady stream ? I ran the engine at idle for about 15 minutes while revving the engine only slightly to see if the stream of water would increase, but not a big difference.

On this engine the exhaust comes out of the propeller, and I am noticing a good stream of water coming out of the propeller, and right above the trim tab there is what looks like two vents one on each side at the back, and water is coming out there.

After all this info .... sorry it is so long....the engine never got hot ...it was very cool even after running for 15 minutes or more.

Is water going where it shouldn't ? Should I be concerned at the amount of water coming out of the pee hole ?

Thanks for any help on this.

Was this "small steady stream" on the muffs in your yard or in the water? You will probably get more pressure in the water.

If the engine is not overheating (you can hold your hand on the block between the flywheel and the cylinder head for at least 5 seconds) you are probably good to go.

yah this is just w/ the muffs ....
Should I get a bucket to fill up and see if it does any better ? And since I can hold my hand on the motor for quite a bit I guess I have nothing to worry about.

The only other thing I am worried about is how much it is smoking ... I ran it for a good half hour off and on and still smoking a lot. Didn't know if this was normal for an older outboard or if I should look at further tune up ?

If its an older outboard and you're running on pre-mix its going to smoke especially on muffs or in a barrel. Put in in the water and test drive it. Nothing beats a test drive to see what's going on.

Your 65HP Merc is fine, from your description.
I just dont like that "water comming out around the plug' thing
Run a compression check on this engine before depending upon it., That narrow stream is all there is to see when the boat is running. It's small so it will have more pressure, and shoot further out, giving you an indication from the helm that all is well.

Just_a_Kid

I agree that your engine is probably fine.

The old 4 cyl merc's 50 and 65 hp are known for not having a "strong stream" of tell tale water, so even a weak stream of water indicates your water pump is fine.

Also, your engine does not have a cylinder head in the typical manner. The "cylinder head" is cast into the top of the cylinder. There is a water jacket cover on top of that. The water leaking around the spark plug is leaking from the water jacket cover (not a cylinder head). If you got the leak fixed it should be OK. The water leak you saw could not have gotten into the cylinder, so there should not be a problem.

When you are in the lake make sure you look back on occasion to see the tell tale stream.

Also, don't worry about the smoke, unless it quits smoking, then worry!!!! It is better to have it smoke to much than not enough. If you feel the smoke is to much, then be careful about how you mix your fuel and oil. Do not mix less than 50:1 to lessen the smoke. I usually try to mix a bit more oil than recommended, and deal with the smoke.

Good Luck,

Gold Bear ;)

Thanks everybody,

since I am just starting out in this I don't want to make a simple mistake and screw something up, now that I know I have the engine going fine I can start to work on the rest of the boat.

Thanks again.

Just A Kid-- Your motor is running fine, you can add a water pressure gauge to it. There is a plug on the top left rear that can be removed and a fitting installed to go to a pressure gauge. If you do get a 0-15 psi gauge as at idle it will read about 3-4 psi and at WOT 6-8 psi.
Hope this helps
