I have a 90hp 2stroke 3cylinder 1991 mariner outboard that I am having trouble getting started. During the summer and warmer months the engine would start but it would take a lot of turning over before it would fire up. As soon as the weather got cold the engine wouldnt start. I know that the enrichener/choke is worked by pushing in the ignition key in while the ignition is in the on position, and that I should hear a click when the enrichener/choke comes on. There is no click when the key is pushed in so Im wondering if I have a faulty enrichener valve? I know that the reason the engine wont start could be a number of things so I have got a new battery, tried a differnet fuel tank and lines with fresh fuel, there is a good spark on all the plugs. I have tried pushing in the button on the botton of the enrichener valve and still no joy.
So could it be the enrichener valve????
Thanks for reading.

Re: Enrichener valve not working???

It could be the ignition switch, wiring or enrichener valve. I would put a test light on the wiring to the enrichener and activate it and see if you are getting power to it. If I was, I would then disconnect the hose and see if I was getting fuel flow when activated.
Rule out all possibilities before just throwing parts at it. May be as simple as a bad connection.

My enrich valve has manual knob on top,and CCW to open for 4 sec then CW to close.Pump ball first and pull bottom hose off valve to check for flow.
Check your yellow/black wire at terminal on engine with key activated. Also check and clean black ground wire.

run a jumper wire from you pos on battery to yellow black connection on the terminal block close to your choke. If it clicks its in your wiring from there back. I just ran from a toggle switch one line to the battery pos and one run to choke terminal pos and I was in business.

Re: Enrichener valve not working???

Well I got the engine running the other day, there is still no click from the enrichener valve but when the engine was running and warmed up I pushed in the key to see if the enrichener valve would flood the engine, and yes the engine stalled after 30 seconds of the key being held in. Whe I restarted the engine it was very smokey, I guess it was burning off the excess fuel from where it was flooded. Thanks guys for your input.
