new to boating, and I feel like we might have gotten taken. we have a 87 envirude 150 outboard. runs great in nuetural or when you put it in gear but as soon as you put a load on it (take off) it dies, or spits and sputters until it dies. we have fixed a few "noticable problems" needed coils and needed new clamps on most of fuel lines. but this has got me stumped. Any suggestions? Anything to look for?

Thanks
Auntie M

Hi,

Welcome to iBoats!

Clean up all visible areas in the engine compartment first. It will later on be easier to notice leaks on fuel lines, carburators and gaskets.

Try to use only new fuel without water in it. Make sure the tank is getting air from vent. Check the fuel line for leaks.

Change spark plugs to be sure they are in good shape. Have it a try!

If there's still problems I think you should do a carb rebuild. It's not so difficult! Buy a rebuild kit with new gaskets, floats, etc. Make sure eveything gets properly sealed afterwards.
You could also at the same time when the carbs are out of the way check the reed valves. Don't forget to change fuel filter.

After this it should run better. In order to get some knowledge of the condition of the engine, do a compression test on it.

BUY A MANUAL!!!

Good Luck and Happy boating!

The best thing with boating is when you have to work with the engine!

B.R.
Robbi

one more thing.........
you mentioned you might need a new coil??..are you sure you are running off of all cylinders because a engine will run fine in nuetral with a bummed cylinder or 2, but as soon as you put it in gear you have an extream lack of power. Take an old plug and make the gap like 3/8's of an inch. Unhook all the plug wires from the plugs and attach one to your modified plug and lay the plug on the engine block. Have someone crank over the engine and check to see if you have a good spark. Do this with all cylinders.

If you have spark on all cylinders, then do a compression test. If you don't have a tester you can get a cheap one for like 25 bucks. Compression should all be over 100 and within 10-15% of each other. Run these tests and let the experts know what you find...they are great at figuring these things out.

good luck

I had a similar problem when I bought a used Johnson 120. Ended up being a frozen timer base ( it's under the flywheel). Check to make sure yours moves freely when the throttle is advanced.

Thanks a bunch, Today we ordered a carb kit from iboats. we are waiting for the package as we speak, I am hoping to get the boat on the water with a skier before I leave to jamaica in 10 days. would really like to see the thing cruise before I get mad and sink it.

Auntie M

The carbs need to be torn down and soaked in a suitable carburator solvent. Then blown out with compressed air making sure that each and every orifice and passageway, no matter how small is clean and open. Sometimes this involves running a fine wire into some of the smaller passages. Do it skip right or else you're just wasting your time and money.
