EPIRB- Recommendations?

I'm in the market for an EPIRB. I really hope that I don't run into anything too serious out there, but winter weather is just starting to set in here in SoCal and I have been spending some time 25+ miles out. Does anyone have any recommendations for an EPIRB that won't cost more than my boat, but that I will still feel safe with?

Re: EPIRB- Recommendations?

My buddy bought one of the PLB -personal locator beacon- I'm sure it was inexpensive. He hunts and boats and it's registered for use on land or sea. He was recently the victim of a home invasion style robbery and set off the beacon in his garage. It worked....people called and police came. The compelling feature for me is taking it with you on another persons boat.

I have a super whiz bang gps enabled EPIRB. I travel 60 miles out and wanted the extra perceived security of a boat mounted model.

There should be a couple places around you that rent them. Id go and ask them about them and see which ones they use.
I did some reading on them and there are major differences in some of the ones avilable.

Thanks for the tips. Thats a crazy story with the home invasion! With the boat mounted version, can you detach it if the boat starts to actually sink? I would wonder whether you would run the risk of getting seperated from the boat if it actually went under... Thanks- Tom

Some have an auto release and others you have to do manually.
Thats why i suggested going to a rental place and seeing what they use and why. They also have different trcking on them, some use gps and some dont, and some can take hours to send the signal and so on.
