Quick question... On the lower unit there are them two bars coming out. One that comes out of the water pump thing which I think is like the driveshaft and the other one that I think deals with the gears.

Should you be able to spin the one coming out of the water pump and make the prop holder thing spin? I could do it before but now it wont. I know I probably confused ya on that one... basically before I was able to spin the one coming out of the water pump and if the prop was on... it would spin. BUT now I spin it and that thing doesnt move. Is that okay or did I knock something when I was trying to install the lower unit which I still cant get on?

Sounds like you have shifted into neutral.

ezeke, how can I shift it out of neutral? I started playing with that rod and spun it around a few times trying it and it seems to be staying in neutral. I even unscrewed it enough that it came loose and lifts right out? lol I screwed it back in real quick though. Is there anyways for me to shift it into another gear before I install it just to make sure its working okay?

The bigger shaft is the drive shaft. The engine spins that one. The other is the shift shaft. That one shifts the lower unit gears between forward, neutral and reverse. You don't spin it to change gears -- it raises and lowers. By unscrewing that shaft you now have it out of adjustment. Make sure you get it right before you attempt to reinstall the lower unit.

Neal, in the manual it will have a shift rod height adjustment measurement. Just grab a tape measure and turn it in or out until it's at the appropriate measurement. I don't recall off-hand which engine you had...
