Things are moving slow, and I'm annoyed. The carpet adhesive on the bow piece isn't coming off. I sprayed with paint stripper, which worked to a limited extent, but the rest is still stuck there. I can very slowly and painfully cut under the wood with a knife, but it would take me a year to get it all off. The sander won't sand through it. Can I just epoxy over it?

Try using a industrial heat gun, like for removing wallpaper..Should turn that carpet glue to goo

More progress. Thanks kev, the heat gun worked great. But it was still slow. I found another solution- Paint thinner completely neutralized the stickiness and i was able to get most of it off with a bit of scraping from a big knife. I finally have the bow piece cleared. It's still a bit wet in spots from the paint thinner

There's also that hole in the middle where the rot was around the rivet hole. I had to cut about 2 inches out from around it. The actual visible black spot was only 1 cm around. Rot really does cover about 4 times more than you think upon initial analysis. I bought epoxy and will fill with a mix of epoxy and sawdust.

I also have the foam I bought cut and laid. I need more though, more of the thinner sheets. I will buy a 1 inch sheet or two and cut that to fit.

Poorly fitting windshield is attached to the boat with smal 2" wood squares! The wood squares are screwed through the windshield and then screwed through the aluminum bow. I will replace that when a good deal on a windshield pops up.

The dash and side boards are going to get new white marine vinyl. The wood underneath is fine, just not too pretty.

Replacing it on the side boards seems fairly straightforward and easy. I hear the dash is a real *** to remove. As time comes, I try to will find a way to get the new vinyl on as painlessly as possible. I remain hopeful there's a way to replace the vinyl without removing the dashboard.

I had the dash off my Jupiter. There's a TON of fasteners but it isn't particularly difficult. There are a bunch of screws underneath the rubber strip there along the top. I replaced the wood with a PVC trim board from Lowes. Very easy to work with and will never rot.

I am considering making a "new" dash board that will be thin and I can place it on top of the old with some nice stainless screws. That will save the original for future possible use but give me a nice new look. Gauges, switches will be mounted under the aluminum tray on a new panel. 50 degrees Thursday, up from 10 yesterday, spring is coming? Can't wait. :)

Erik the rig is coming along nicely, sounds like you will be ready for spring and on the water enjoying your work before you know it:)

Did the boat come with the outboard? Where is it?:D

BTW I've been using a shop vac called a buckethead. It fits over a home depot 5 gallon bucket and works great. They are fairly inexpensive and convenient to use on a boat since they take up little space.

The outboard is still hanging on the back of the transom. A lot of work has been done although I haven't been updating... I'll get pics up soon.

Foam is all in place.

The deck is cut, fitted, and epoxied. The epoxy has cured and the bow piece has been reinstalled. I am going to figure out the arrangement of the pedestal seats to go with and will pre-drill the holes and install the bolts and either some big fender washers or a aluminum plate for backing before I rivet down the remaining pieces, while I still have access to the bottom of the floors.

My large rivets suck. About half the time, the mandels are breaking off rather than pulling free .. I also have realized what all the rusted sticks that were under my ribs are. Mandrels! Starcraft used aluminum rivets with mild steel mandrels, and either they fell out or they didn't pick them all up. I would suggest all restorers refrain from using mild steel mandrels when riveting.

Half the boat is prepped for paint now. Paint will arrive on friday, I intend to paint it all during the weekend and be done with the job on Monday!
